Advancing Geotechnical Practice: Sustainable Solutions to
Land and Infrastructure Developments

In recent years, Hong Kong has embarked on a new transformative phase of development, marked by the creation of new lands and new development areas to build more housing and vital infrastructure projects like rail links and road networks. Projects, such as the development of the Northern Metropolis, the development of Kau Yi Chau Artificial Islands, and other initiatives outlined in the Major Transport Infrastructure Development Blueprint 2023, are either underway, in the planning stage, or on the drawing board. These endeavours not only present immense opportunities for the engineering and construction sectors, but also bring forth challenges including the timely completion of land formation to bolster housing supplies and the imperative for sustainable, resilient urban development amid evolving climate changes.

Geotechnical engineers assume a pivotal role in ensuring the successful execution and sustainability of these projects. It is important that we continuously explore innovative approaches to elevate the standards of excellence in geotechnical practice. The time has come for us to propel geotechnical engineering to new heights by embracing innovation and cutting-edge technologies. This seminar aims to provide a platform for practitioners and academics to share ideas and showcase their inventive and sustainable solutions for land and infrastructure developments, with the goal of advancing geotechnical practice.
