Professor Chu Jian is President’s Chair in Civil Engineering, Chair of School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and founding Director of the Centre for Urban Solutions at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Engineering Singapore.
Professor Chu worked for Iowa State University, USA, from 2011 to 2014 as professor and James M. Hoover Chair in Geotechnical Engineering. Currently, he is the Chair for Technical Committee TC217 on Land Reclamation under ISSMGE, a member of TC211 on Soil Improvement, and a past president of the Geotechnical Society of Singapore. He is an Editor for a high impact journal Acta Geotechnica, Editor-in-Chief for a new journal Biogeotecnics, and Associate Editor for ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering.
Professor Chu has received several awards and delivered more than 80 keynote or invited lectures at international conferences. He is also a consultant for several large-scale construction projects in Singapore and the region.

Ir Dr Julian Kwan is currently the Assistant Director (Technical) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China. Apart from leading the Technical Branch of the department, he is in charge of steering the adoption of innovation and technology as well as technical development to enhance the quality and productivity of CEDD's service and project delivery.
Over the past 20 years, Ir Dr Kwan has contributed in numerous applied geotechnical research as part of his work in the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO), CEDD. He held various positions in the GEO including Chief Geotechnical Engineer/Standards and Testing to steer technical advancement projects for enhancing the design and construction of landslide mitigation works, as well as Chief Geotechnical Engineer/Planning to oversee the cavern development strategy and natural terrain landslide risk management.
